Mooncakes, Tea & Mindful Indulgence: A Better Way to Enjoy Mid-Autumn Festival
Mid-Autumn Festival is one of those occasions where food is about much more than food.
It is about reunion gatherings, sharing mooncakes with family and friends, pouring tea, catching up and taking part in traditions we look forward to every year.
And that is exactly why we do not believe wellness should mean avoiding the mooncake altogether.
At Company of Wellness, our approach to the festive season is simple:
Know. Enjoy. Balance.
Know what you are eating. Enjoy it wholeheartedly. Balance the celebration with simple habits that help you feel good before, during and after.
That is also the idea behind our new Mid-Autumn Wellness Guide. This guide is a practical little companion to help you enjoy the season without turning mooncakes into something to feel guilty about.
Small in Size, Surprisingly Rich
Mooncakes may look relatively small, but traditional recipes can be surprisingly energy-dense.
The pastry and filling commonly contain a combination of flour, sugar or syrup, oil and rich fillings. This means one mooncake can add up quickly, especially when it is enjoyed after a full meal, as it often is during festive gatherings.
Our guide compares several popular varieties, from plain lotus paste and double-yolk mooncakes to five-kernel, red bean snowskin and durian snowskin.
One of the more surprising lessons?
Snowskin does not automatically mean lighter.
While the skin may sometimes contain less oil than a traditional baked mooncake, the sugar and filling still contribute significantly to the overall calories. A rich durian or chocolate-filled snowskin mooncake can be very different from a lighter red bean version.
The real question to ask is:
What am I actually choosing, and how much do I want to enjoy?
Smaller Slice, Same Celebration
You do not need to skip mooncakes to enjoy Mid-Autumn Festival more mindfully.
A simple approach is to treat mooncake as what it is: a rich festive treat meant to be enjoyed and shared.
Instead of eating an entire mooncake at once, start with around one-eighth or one-quarter.
Share a few different flavours around the table so everyone can taste more without needing a whole mooncake each.
Rather than arriving at the mooncake table hungry, enjoy it after a balanced meal.
The goal is not to turn the celebration into calorie counting. It is to make room for the foods you genuinely enjoy while keeping the rest of your day relatively balanced.
And Then There Is Tea
Mooncake and tea have always felt like natural companions.
There is something about a warm, unsweetened tea that balances the richness and sweetness of mooncake while refreshing the palate between bites.
Our Mid-Autumn guide suggests pairings such as:
Lotus Paste + Pu-Erh — the earthy character of the tea balances the sweetness of the filling
Five-Kernel (Wu Ren) + Oolong — floral and lightly roasted notes complement the nuttiness
Red Bean Paste + Jasmine or Green Tea — a lighter tea pairing for the sweet filling.
Fruit-infused Snowskin + Longjing — its light, grassy profile pairs well with fruity flavours.
Instead of thinking of tea as something you drink only after you have eaten too much, make it part of the experience itself.
Slow down. Pour the tea. Cut the mooncake into smaller pieces. Try different combinations.
Your Mid-Autumn Festival Does Not Need to Be Perfectly Healthy
The point of a wellness-minded Mid-Autumn Festival is not to make every mooncake lower in calories or to spend the evening worrying about every bite. It is to enjoy the traditions you love without completely abandoning the habits that help you feel good.
Choose the mooncakes you actually want. Share them. Pair them with tea. Enjoy them slowly.
And when the celebration is over, return to your usual routine.
That is balance.
